ABOUT KIMBERLY SHAPPS

I earned my law degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1995 and earned a Master of Social Work from Loyola University Chicago in 2004. I began my career as an attorney in the public interest sector representing low-income victims of domestic violence in civil proceedings. As an attorney I worked as the Clinic Legal Director at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic (fka Pro Bono Advocates), overseeing the agency's civil court clinic for orders of protection, and providing training to volunteer attorneys on the Illinois Domestic Violence Act.  I also spent several years as a Staff Attorney at Life Span Center for Legal Services.  In 1998, I co-authored the chapter, "Obtaining Civil Orders of Protection" for the IICLE Family Law volume.

After leaving the practice of law, I worked as the Associate Director of Outreach at Neopolitan Lighthouse, where I developed and implemented a domestic violence outreach program educating community members on Chicago's West side.  I also served as the Director of Transitional Housing and Independent Living at Teen Living Programs, where I developed a scattered-site housing program for homeless and runaway teenagers.

My clinical internships included work at Deborah's Place providing counseling and case management services to homeless women and at District 39, Highcrest Middle School working with 5th and 6th graders in a school setting.

In addition to my private practice, I also currently work as a therapist at SHALVA providing therapeutic services for Jewish women affected by domestic violence.
